Choreographer Lise Houlton knows how to get those ballet-trained bodies down into some raw emotional territory. 2 and 7-9: A contemporary ballet that sings and dances the blues, “Rumblings” features the athletic sensuality of MDT’s terrific dancers accompanied by live music. 23-25: Infusing the 2,000-year-old south Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam with contemporary exuberance, this internationally renowned company was recently heralded by the New York Times as “an excellent company (that) shows how Indian forms can provide some of the most transcendent experiences that dance has to offer.” Ragamala’s newest work, “Sacred Earth,” is inspired by the dynamic art of the Warli people of western India and by the rice flour designs south Indian people create as offerings to Mother Earth.
